Tishman Construction Management Program/Programs – M.Eng. CEM

Overview

The Tishman Construction Management Program (TCMP) offers the 8 month, 26 credit Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree program in Construction Engineering and Management (CEM). The program can be completed in 8 months (Fall and Winter semesters) and is for students who generally intend to pursue a professional career in the construction industry. Students who successfully complete the online MasterTrack Certificate in Construction Engineering and Management (MTC-CEM), and are then admitted to the on-campus M.Eng. program can earn 6 credits of acceleration in the M.Eng. degree program. This option offers significant cost savings in total tuition of the M.Eng. degree program as can be seen from this Cost Comparison. Students who complete the online MTC-CEM program only need to complete 20 more course credits on campus to obtain the M.Eng. degree instead of the regular course load of 26 credits.

The M.Eng. program can also be combined with multiple options for dual degrees (e.g., Architecture, Business) in collaboration with other programs at the university. The information below describes the M.Eng. program and the available dual-degree options. The M.Eng. program requires 26 credit hours of graduate work (typically eight graduate courses and two graduate seminars, or six graduate courses and two graduate seminars if preceded by MTC-CEM) and does not require a thesis or other major research project. The emphasis is on construction professional practice. A term-long construction professional practice project is part of the curriculum. At least two graduate courses must be taken in areas other than construction. This area is called a Secondary Elective or Secondary. Students typically choose a Secondary in areas such as business, architecture, industrial engineering, sustainability, mathematics, and computer science.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for application to the M.Eng. program, but is strongly recommended especially for international applicants. For a clarification on the GRE recommended versus required issue, please visit the FAQ section.

Letters of recommendation are required.

Students who do not meet undergraduate degree requirements for regular admission may be granted conditional admission. Students may be required to take courses without graduate credit to remedy deficiencies in their undergraduate programs.

CEE 530 – Construction Professional Practice (Student Team Consulting) is a core course in the M.Eng. program. Students take CEE 530 in the second semester of the M.Eng. program. CEE 530 consists of discussions led by industry speakers on their professional practices and the Construction Student Team Consulting Project.

The program has strong collaborative ties with the construction industry and through the UM Construction Industry Alliance Program (UMCIAP), offers significant opportunity for students to interact with professionals and pursue internships or full-time employment.

Master of Engineering Programs

M.Eng. in Construction Engineering and Management

This program requires at least 18 hours of graduate courses in CE&M, 6 hours of graduate courses in a Secondary area, and 2 hours of graduate seminars (one in CE&M, and one in a technical or management area related to CE&M). Also available are dual degrees by which a student can receive an M.Eng. in Construction Engineering and Management and a Master of Architecture degree or a Master of Business Administration degree. Regular admission is open to students holding an undergraduate degree (e.g., B.S.E., B.E.) in Civil Engineering or Construction. Applicants with engineering degrees in other disciplines are eligible to apply, but may be required to take pre-requisite Civil Engineering courses without graduate credit. Applicants with bachelor’s degrees in architecture or other non-engineering programs may be granted admission if they have a strong background in college-level mathematics and college-level physics, but may be required to take pre-requisite Civil Engineering courses without graduate credit as well. Dual M.Eng. in Construction Engineering and Management / Master of Architecture (M. Arch)

The dual degree program combines the two-year 60-hour M Arch program with the 8 month, 26-hour M.Eng. (CE&M) program, resulting in a two and half year dual-degree program. Dual M.Eng. in Construction Engineering and Management / Master of Business Administration (MBA)

The dual degree program combines the two-year, 60-hour MBA program with the 8 month, 26-hour M.Eng. (CE&M) program, resulting in a two-year dual-degree program. Up to 6 credits hours from the M.Eng. program can be double counted towards the dual degree. The dual degree program can be completed in two years if the first year is devoted to core MBA courses. Application Materials

Required Materials:

Application materials for the M.Eng. in CE&M consist of the following:

  • Completed online application form
  • Application fee (a check or money order made payable to University of Michigan or completed credit card information)
  • Statement of Purpose and Personal Statement
  • Three Letters of Recommendation.
  • Transcripts (Marksheets) from all colleges and universities attended
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores. [GRE scores are optional and not required. Please see FAQs for an explanation.]
  • International Students only:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) scores (international students only). See this site for minimum score requirements.
    • International students who are accepted for admission must submit certification of finances. You may submit those documents with your application package or at a later date, when requested to do so.
