The Certificate in CEM credential offers an accelerated pathway for learners into the Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) graduate degree program in Construction Engineering and Management. More information on the M.Eng. program and how to use the Certificate credential as a potential stepping stone towards the M.Eng. graduate degree can be found by visiting the M.Eng. program page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why is this program considered a stackable Certificate?
If a student successfully completes this online certificate, and is then admitted to our on-campus Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) program, then the student can earn up to 6 credits of acceleration in the graduate degree program. In other words, a student who has completed the online certificate will only need to complete 20 additional credits of work on campus in order to obtain the M.Eng degree instead of the regular course load of 26 credits. These credits can be typically completed on campus in 8 months (Fall and Winter semesters).
Q: How is the Certificate in CEM program unique or different from other certificate programs?
The Certificate in CEM program from the University of Michigan offers world class education from a top-tier university. The certificate offers learners an excellent introduction to the fundamental as well as modern construction engineering and management topics that are globally relevant in a professional context.
The Certificate in CEM program also provides an accelerated pathway for learners into the in-residence Master’s program on our campus, and allows admitted learners to receive 6 credits towards a full Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree in Construction Engineering and Management.
Q: What kind of certificate will I get upon completion of the Certificate in CEM program?
A formal certificate will be issued to learners upon completion of the program. The certificate will be issued as a digital credential from the University of Michigan. It will be signed by the faculty members who teach the courses as well as by members in university leadership.
Q: If a student successfully completes the Certificate in CEM program, is admission to the on-campus Master’s degree programs guaranteed?
No. Completing the Certificate in CEM program itself does not guarantee admission to the on-campus programs in any way. A student must meet all the admission criteria for those degree programs in order to be admitted. However, as noted above, if admitted, a student who has completed the certificate may be eligible for up to 6 credits of acceleration in the on-campus M.Eng. (CEM) graduate degree program. Please visit the M.Eng. program page for more information.
Q: How much does the Certificate in CEM program cost?
The Certificate in CEM program costs $2000 USD. This amount covers the entire program and all six courses.
Q: Are there any scholarships or financial aid offered to students enrolled in the Certificate in CEM program?
Unfortunately, at this time there are no scholarships or financial aid of any type available from the University of Michigan to support applicants to this online certificate.
Q: How many courses are in the Certificate in CEM program?
The Certificate in CEM program is a series of six courses, designed to provide an introduction to the foundations and modern topics in construction engineering and management. Detailed outlines of the course topics are provided in this document.
Q: Can the courses be taken in any order?
It is recommended that learners proceed in the sequence of the cohort that they are enrolled in.
Q: Can I only enroll in individual classes or do I have to sign up for all the six courses?
The Certificate in CEM is currently offered only as a full program comprising of all six courses. The certificate is issued to learners only after completion of all the six courses. An informal milestone digital badge is also issued upon completion of each of the six courses.
Q: Can I see detailed outlines of topics for the six courses?
Yes, detailed outlines of the course topics are provided in this document.
Q: Are the classes live (synchronous) or pre-recorded (asynchronous)?
All the classes are pre-recorded and can be viewed by learners at their convenience. Some classes may have some sessions of live interaction with the instructor or the teaching assistants if necessary.
Q: How long does the Certificate in CEM program take to complete?
The Certificate in CEM program can be completed in approximately 6-7 months.
Q: What prerequisites or admission requirements are there for the Certificate in CEM program? Do learners need to have an Undergraduate degree before enrolling in this program?
The Certificate in CEM program does not have any formal admission requirements. However, we recommend that learners have a fundamental grasp of Mathematics, particularly Algebra and Geometry, and basic concepts from Physics, such as force. An Undergraduate degree is not required for enrolling in this program.
Q: What admission requirements are there for the Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) program?
Please visit the M.Eng. program page for more information on admission requirements as well as the acceleration benefits offered by the Certificate in CEM credential. Completion of the certificate does not guarantee admission to a full Master’s degree program. Information about the admissions requirements for the full degree programs offered by the Tishman Construction Management Program can be found at the Graduate Programs page.
Q: Is this a full Master’s Degree program?
No. The Certificate in CEM program is a series of courses designed to introduce the foundations of a Construction Engineering and Management master’s curriculum, but does not reach the same breadth and depth of study as a full Master’s Degree program. For more information on how to use the Certificate in CEM credential as a stepping stone towards the M.Eng. graduate degree, please visit the M.Eng. program page.
Q: How many credits is the Certificate in CEM worth?
The specific number of credits available to those who complete the Certificate in CEM program and are admitted to the corresponding Master’s Degree program on campus is up to 6 credits. This reduction in credit for completion is approximately one-quarter (i.e., half semester) worth of on-campus effort.
Q: How much will the full Master’s degree program cost if I complete the Certificate in CEM program first?
The cost of a full Master’s Degree will be dependent on how much time the student spends on campus, which can change according to a number of factors. We anticipate that a student will need two full semesters of on-campus effort to complete a Master’s degree beyond the Certificate in CEM program. The cost of tuition per semester for international and domestic students can be found at the UM Registrar’s Website.
Q: How do I register for the MasterTrack Certificate?
You can register for the next cohort in the Certificate in CEM program by visiting the following website: https://nexus.engin.umich.edu/pro-ed/construction-eng-mgmt/ and clicking the button that says “Enroll”.
